If you're sitting your GCSE English Language Paper 1 exam soon, you already know AO2 is your chance to shine. This is where you show off your analytical skills and dig into how a writer uses language and structure to keep the reader hooked.
✨PS: TOMORROW I’ll go over how to pass your Language Paper 1 exams in 5 EASY Steps on YouTube in this video (click the image to watch):
Think of A02 as the part where examiners want you to go beyond just what is written — they want you to explore how and why it's written that way.
To help you out, I’ve put together 10 techniques that are used time and time again — plus tips on how to write about them like someone aiming for those top grades.
🎯 1. Simile
Writers use similes to create vivid imagery or strong comparisons.
“Her face was as white as snow.”
📝 Write This: The simile “as white as snow” suggests innocence or shock, emphasising the character’s emotional state.
🔥 2. Metaphor
A metaphor is when something is described as something else — not just compared.
“Time is a thief.”
📝 Write This: By calling time a “thief”, the writer implies it steals moments from us, creating a sense of urgency or regret.
🧊 3. Personification
This gives human qualities to non-human things.
“The wind whispered secrets through the trees.”
📝 Write This: The personification of the wind “whispering” adds a mysterious and eerie tone to the setting.
📢 4. Alliteration
Repetition of the same sound at the beginning of words — it makes descriptions memorable.
“The slippery snake slithered silently.”
📝 Write This: The sibilance mimics the sound of a snake, creating a sinister and tense atmosphere.
🩸 5. Juxtaposition
This is when two contrasting ideas are placed close together.
“She laughed through her tears.”
📝 Write This: The juxtaposition of joy and sadness reflects emotional complexity and grabs the reader’s attention.
🧩 6. Sentence Structure (Varied Sentences)
Short sentences = drama. Long ones = detail. Lists = overwhelm. Sentence structure affects pace and tension.
“She ran. She tripped. She fell.”
📝 Write This: The use of short, staccato sentences builds suspense and mirrors the frantic pace of the moment.
🧠 7. Repetition
Writers repeat words or ideas for emphasis or rhythm.
“Alone. Alone. Alone.”
📝 Write This: The repetition of “alone” reinforces the character’s isolation and desperation.
🌍 8. Emotive Language
Words that tap into the reader’s feelings.
“The helpless child sobbed uncontrollably.”
📝 Write This: Emotive language like “helpless” and “sobbed” evokes sympathy from the reader and deepens emotional engagement.
🧱 9. Anaphora
Fancy name, easy technique — it's when a word or phrase is repeated at the start of successive sentences.
“We will fight. We will rise. We will win.”
📝 Write This: The use of anaphora builds a rhythmic, persuasive tone and rallies the reader behind the speaker’s cause.
🕳 10. Contrast / Shift in Tone
Changes in tone or topic keep the reader alert.
“The sky was clear. Then the storm came.”
📝 Write This: The sudden tonal shift from peace to chaos creates tension and surprises the reader, reflecting the unpredictability of nature.
✍️ How to Structure Your AO2 Paragraph (Use This Formula!)
Here’s the breakdown:
Point: Identify the technique.
Evidence: Short quote.
Explanation: What does it make the reader feel, think, or imagine?
Link: Why did the writer choose to do this?
🧠 Pro Tip: Use verbs like “suggests”, “implies”, “emphasises”, “reinforces”, “reflects”.
Final Words 💬
Language and structure techniques are everywhere in the extracts. Spot them, name them, explain the effect — and you're golden 🌟
Remember: you're not just saying what the writer did. You’re showing why it matters.
🔥 Next time you sit down with a practice paper, give yourself a mini challenge: can you spot at least five of these techniques in the extract? Better yet, can you explain why they’re effective? It’s great practice — and exactly the kind of thinking that gets you top marks.
